About The Birch Online Journal

In addition to an annual printed issue, The Birch publishes articles online on a rolling basis.

Submission Guidelines

We accept:

  • Academic Essays (no word limit)

  • Op-eds (750-1500 words)

  • Reviews (500-750 words)

  • Creative Writing (no word limit)

  • Translations (no word limit)

  • Photography + Art

Submission Requirements

  • All contributors must be current undergraduates at accredited universities

  • Do not include your name or institution on the submitted work to facilitate blind reads

  • Submit all entries as word documents (.doc), formatted in 12 pt. Times New Roman font and 1.5 spacing

  • For academic essays, please use MLA in-text citations and bibliography

  • For photography and art pieces, please upload the highest quality image.

  • All submissions must not have been previously published and should not be considered for publication elsewhere

  • Students who have their work accepted should be willing and able to participate in our editorial process

  • For creative writing submissions, authors should include at least one paragraph explaining how their piece is related to Eastern Europe, Central Europe, or Eurasia

  • Pieces should not be submitted for both print and online review

Publication Timeline

Online submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. Pieces will undergo an editing process within 2-3 weeks of acceptance.

Articles and op-eds on current events may be subject to an expedited publication timeline.
